Autumn in Somerset is an absolutely gorgeous time of year. There’s a crisp feel in the air, fires in pubs are aglow and we know that the fun and festivities of Christmas are just around the corner.
With the glorious autumn colours visible throughout the area, now is the perfect time to head out on a brisk country walk to drink in the very best of this season. Here are a couple of our favourite destinations.
Cheddar Gorge
Starting at Cheddar Visitor Information Centre, there is a fabulous 4 mile walk that provides the most stunning views of Cheddar Gorge, England’s largest gorge. You’ll discover weathered crags and pinnacles alongside a diverse collection of plants and wildlife. The gorge is almost 122m deel and 3 miles long and this deep gorge started forming around one million years ago during the last Ice Age.
On reaching the top of the cliffs, you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of Cheddar, Glastonbury Tor, the Somerset levels and Bridgwater Bay.
In the village you’ll find plenty of places to stop and rest and maybe enjoy a rewarding mug of hot chocolate!
Brean Down Coast
A wonderful circular walk is waiting to be discovered on the scenic coastal path that leads across Brean Down. One of the great landmarks of the Somerset coastline, the Down stands over 92m high and extends 1.5 miles.
This circular route is steep at first, with some steps so sturdy footwear is needed but the views are worth the climb! You’ll also be able to see an abundance of wildlife so keep watching for coastal birds and butterflies.
The walk will take you around an hour to complete and is perfect for dogs on leads.
